Aetherial
Founded in 2100 and recognised as a government in 2109 through inspiring the Settlement Act 2109, Aetherial is in fact just the capital city of the Belter population. The whole asteroid belt is officially a nation called the Asteroid Belt with the capital town of Aetherial and two regions. The space surrounding Aetherial is designated as 'Aetherial State' a region with a lot of laws to help trade, commerce and safety. The State Volume is based on maritime law but extends to 150km radial to encompass the interference of an Impossibility Engine. In order to preserve traditions and freedoms, there are almost no Aetherial laws that extend into the second region called the 'Outback', named after Australia's Outback. The Outback region is the volume encompassed by 150km radial from each asteroid, making it a large tube around the Sun. Bounty hunters and sheriffs ensure the Outback holds true to the Constitution although it is a bit like the old Wild West at times. As industry continues to grow in the Outback, Outback legal practice is also an expanding enterprise.
Swam Hub
Swarm hubs are a naturally occurring economic phenomena typical to the Belt. They happen when a few ships dock together to trade, creating a temporary local market place. The key thing is that other traders who wouldn't have traded, then see the efficiency of the temporary marketplace and decide to join. Ships are pairing up all the time to trade so swarm hubs are mostly random in both time, place and duration. Some markets however are so handy they have become a regular calendar event and Aetherial started out as a swarm hub that ended up becoming a permanent national capital. Once a year, after the Fire election, Aetherial does a full 'decoupling', where each ship or component is detached and reattached. It allows old ships to swap out for new, relocation of ships for efficiency and for each component to pass an annual self-sufficiency test. Apart from the government systems, Aetherial operates as a Ship EI hive mind and the decoupling is planned before it happens. Every component must have a flight plan before the annual 'decoupling' takes place.
Fune Kaisha uses swam hubs to trade illegal goods. Rarely will they dock ships together on their own but instead will wait for a hub to form and join the ships together then. The ships will then doc together on the rim of the swarm and act like a normal trader, after fuel, food or other such basics. Occasionally they will run a whole illegal swarm hub such as the infamous ‘Swarm Hub 67’ that was stormed by the Astry.
