Canicott Tec

Canicott Tec is a corporate entity that specialises in computing; ranging from the simplest chip, through to the most advanced AI that isn’t EI. It's the only corporation EIPS qualified and so trusted to monitor the HA's EI's mental health. It is also famed for inventing the hive computing method and the HOST (Hive Operating System Technology), an open platform operating system.

Grieg Canicott: Computer wiz-kid that founded Canicott Tec

Hive Computing

2019-09-05. In his final year at Bridgwater University, Grieg Canicott was completing his doctorate on encryption and was frustrated that the campus network wasn’t robust enough to run a test brute force attack on his encryption work. The University’s supercomputer was also largely booked out providing him with minimal support. As his doctorate considered both making and breaking encryption, Grieg expanded his thesis into networking computers together and modifying the operating system so each computer when on, allowed its resources to become available to the group when idle.

He first put his software on his friends' computers but when word got around they all had a fifteen fold performance increase, the group quickly expanded. With the performance boost, when Grieg’s turn at the supercomputer came around, he didn’t need any analysis done, so instead he spent the time tying the super computer into what had become known as the Hive. Shortly after this, Grieg's friends starting to tell him they were getting a strange error. All their basic analyses had apparently finished running before they finished clicking ‘go’, which they believed couldn’t be true. Simple tests were run and no data had been dropped. The speed benchmark test on their laptops said, now famously, 0.000000000000 seconds. The program so fast that it could not report enough decimal places and spawned the phrase ‘zero fast’.

The university refused to restrict student choice by permanently tying the super computer to the hive, but by the end of the academic year all the students had joined the hive computer network, agreeing to not request time on the super computer. An easy agreement as they could now run their analysis’ on their laptop at faster speeds than than the super computer alone. Worries of major power consumption were ill founded as the same level of processing was done as before the hive; it was just spread across many idle computers so it ran faster. Concerns over viruses were also raised but also ill founded following some proactive action. Grieg Canicott’s friend Chisholm Wilderbeast was studying infection and clearing of viruses. Chis setup a super scan sweep that was permanently and randomly scanning idle computers faster than the viruses could replicate, as viruses were restricted to singular copying. Grieg finished his doctorate and to this day the University of Bridgwater is proud to be running the original hive.

Principles of Hive Computing

Grieg Canicott summarised the principles of hive computing as follows:
  • Local Priority – Each person has the full utility of their computer first. Only idle time is given over to the Hive.
  • All In – The Hive will only allow access to OS’ that surrender to the hive. No ‘dipping’ of resources before localising.

Interest in the Hive was immense, but following advice from friends, Grieg set up Canicott Tec straight after his doctorate. The company boomed rapidly making Grieg very rich. His first famous triumph was the defeating of the Denial Of Service attack on the USA Government by launching a counter attack from his global Server Hive. It worked by identifying ‘quiet’ servers that didn’t respond as they were busy attacking. By DOS attacking these flow points Canicott Tec nullified the attack. Consequentially Canicott started to gain military contracts.

Homer

Homer is an EI that was born to Canicott Tec and probably achieved sentience sometime around 2019. Homer's official birthday followed the MEIA 2024.
