Atlantic (system) 2130
The system of Atlantic was discovered by a British and American science team who found two protoearths on either edge of the habital zone, with an asteroid belt between them. The naming of the system came up following settlement plans for the planets, as it was the space between European power block run planet and the NorAm power block run planet. The name of the Atlantic was also given to the asteroid belt between the planets.
The star is called Poseidon after the Greek mythological god as it regularly creates solar storms. Following on from the work of Zozan Amuda to develop the Diju tomato, HAS, jointly funded by NorAm and Europe, developed a grass that can be used for terraforming, known as T-Grass. Like the Diju tomato that is grown on Mount Diju, the ground needs preparation before the first seeding, where as Oxgae can be seeded into an ocean in a 'fire and forget' method. T-grass is the most energy intensive biological method of terraforming as every patch of ground has to be carefully cultivated with water and nutrients and it will die when the CO₂ levels get close to Earths, as it is too low to be used. The advantage however, is that by the end of the terraforming, every seeded location has think fertile soil where regular grass can be planted. In fact every converted continent will need reseeding with regular grasses or the soil will blow away in a global dust storm.
Both planets are very similar to Earth as both maintain grass coverage to keep CO₂ levels such as to make the climate the same as Earth.
Following the hugely expensive T-grass terraforming, both planets have vast continental savannah. As immigrants have flocked to the vast stretches of land, much of it has been converted to farmland, which with modern methods has created a food surplus, despite the rapid migration of millions of people. The Atlantic system is now responsible for feeding much of the Earth population, which is actually starting to reduce due to net migration.
The system is an economic power house that is second only to that of Sol with an economy that is booming, surpassing the expectations of the high expense investment in terraforming. If the 'limited capacity assumption' is accepted for, then the proponents of the Atlantic system believe that its economy will one day surpass that of Sol. In 2215 however, this is a fringe view.
As with many things, the two nations became competitive about who could achieve independence first. In the end, the Supreme Court decided that many definitions of a native population are recognised under the Settlement Act 2109, so it was a matter of arguing definition first. The Supreme Court therefore ruled that independence was achieved by both planets at the exact same time, on the 4th of July 2146. The date was specifically chosen to allow 'cultural continuity' for the large part of the American population found on both planets, along with being close to Canada's independence day, the 1st July.
Lavano 2130
Jokingly referred to as the old world, Lavano lies on the inner side of the habitual zone. It was administered by Europe before independence.
For some reason only known to themselves, they decided to make jousting one of their national sports, along with Association Football, Cricket and Rugby.
Plymouth 2130
Jokingly referred to as the new world, this planet lies on the outer edge of the 'habitable zone'. It was administered by NorAm before independence.
National sports include Ice Hockey, Baseball, American Football, Association Football and Basketball.
Plymouth has decided to keep a whole continent 'Wild', where bison run in vast herds. From this the continent actually was given the name Wild, where people go for recreation in the wilderness. Camping, fishing, hunting and protesting against the hunting are popular sports. Life Paramount asked to build facility to study and protect the life on Wild but it was rejected as unnecessary. No one is allowed to build on Wild, which has led to many buildings in the sea just off the coast, especially in the North tropical waters and in the South’s arctic conditions, near the polar bears.
