Fune Kaisha

Overview

Created in 2133, Fune Kaisha is a criminal franchise that continually assesses your worth. Loyalty is viewed as a myth so even if you betray a section of Fune Kaisha, another section or even the original can happily work with you if they can gain from it, as betrayal is also obviously a myth. In Belter-Japanese-English it means ‘Ships Company’.

Origin Story

Out in the asteroid belt, a petty criminal Spark Blaze, was in a dead shuttle, drifting and starving. A small time criminal, he had just been cut out of his local narcotics pool by his local criminal boss who wanted the whole pie. Spark's air was failing, polluted by the damage his shuttle had sustained. He lay on the floor as the emergency light began to fade. Looking up he saw his prized Samurai sword gloriously lit calling to him. He felt his mind begin to shift. He could feel death creeping over him and just before the end he saw a vision of what could be. Death came and Spark went out of him, but he remained completely without fear as he was without a soul. He knew himself now as Blaze, The Soulless. He knew he would build Fune Kaisha, and take his revenge. He stood up and took a hold of his sword. The lights came on and the engine started. By itself the ship turned and engines fired, taking the shuttle back to the dead engine freighter that the local boss called home.

The ship docked, the doors opened and he stepped out. The first docker was by the hatch. At glowing sword tip the docker backed away hands in the air. Blaze left him unharmed. The second docker looked up to see what was going on and on realising, went to press the alarm button. The hand never reached the button, or anything again, as Blaze cut it off with a single swing. The blood loss caused the one handed docker to pass out, although the red hot blade did much to ensure ou would live. As Blaze walked through the ship, he left those alone who hadn't challenged him but when he came across the men that had beaten him earlier, he took their arms. He walked into the bosses room that rang loud from drinking, taking him and his five henchmen completely by surprise. What followed, was a blood bath. A minute later, Blaze sat down in the dead bosses chair and activated the tannoy.
"I am Blaze, the Soulless. If you are still alive then you work for me. Everyone works for me. There are no gangs. There are no businesses. There are no countries. There is only Fune Kaisha. If you have offended me I have taken payment in flesh. You may not grow your flesh back unless I give it to you as a reward. If you grow a hand back without my permission I will double your punishment until you learn or die."

The narcotics the ship was pushing were brain enhancers, meant to be sold to nieve students trying to enhance before taking exams. Blaze knew he had brain damage from beginning to die on the shuttle. He reasoned that the regular medical treatment probably didn't include the narcotics in the ships hold, but only out of stupidity to rules on medical safety. He had with him the purist brain growth and stimulation drugs hord ready to be cut. Smiling he opened a draw in the desk in front of him and in it was a bag of illegal pure brain growth drugs. Over the next few months the drugs enhanced Blaze's brain but what grew back was an enhancement of the existing structure. A blown up version of all that was left. He was a high performing genius that still lack empathy, along with many other emotions he had lost on the shuttle floor. In short order Fune Kaisha took over crime in the Belt with its success linked to its 'franchise' style of control.

The smaller organisations were taken over first and the bosses learned it was better to declare yourself for Fune Kaisha and be largely left alone, then to fight. From the Belt, Fune Kaisha moved in on Earth to become the largest crime syndicate ever made. Some people even started to worship Blaze as a devil god. Blaze doesn't care. There is only business.

Writers Notes

Spark Blaze was in the process of dying when he was on the floor. His brain was dying in a semi-random way, due to the toxic air and limited oxygen. His limbic system was severely damaged leaving Blaze largely emotionless. He doesn't fear. His anger is limited as is his empathy, although he does feel these a little. He calls them his 'pointers'. Being his prize possession, his Samurai sword was on its own display with its own lighting and battery power. This independent power supply was the reason why it appeared to shine out in the dark, as human eyes grew accustomed to the darkened room. The shuttle wasn't badly damaged but critically damaged in the component that held the operating system. After a while, the backup OS took control with basic functions to restore light and air, and to automatically take the shuttle back its transport berth for repair. The on-going brain damage and a semi-unconscious state led Blaze to experience a vision like experience. He is not Japanese but has heard some so the name Fune Kaisha is meant to mean Ships Company but actually means nothing in Japanese, and so is treated like a name.

Philosophy

Fune Kaisha's exists by the philosophy that there is no organisation except itself. Even the HA is regarded as a good educator of the children of Fune Kaisha, nothing more. Anyone claiming to be another organisation is incorrect, and if anyone or anything hinders Fune Kaisha, it is attacked.

  • Fune Kasha is a business structure with Blaze at the top but it doesn't recognise any other organisation as anything more than a department. It cares not if you are a rival mob, a policeone, a politician or a teacher, it will either:
    • Work with you if you are viewed as helping,
    • Ignore you if you are viewed as irrelevant, or
    • Attack you if you are deemed to be hindering.
  • It takes the growth strategy of 'smallest first', using the military strategy of overwhelming force. As the smaller elements are absorbed it grows, providing it with the force to take on a larger group.
  • There is no such thing as loyalty or betrayal, fundamentally making it different from previous organised crime. There is only logic and market value. Logic dictates if you will work against or for Fune Kasha, regardless if you currently do or do not. Anyone selling out other members will affect their market value but they may come back into Fune Kasha if they achieve positive market value. Market value is also a combination of current value and potential value. A member of the general public has zero market value. The higher in Fune Kasha you are the higher your current value. Those with zero current value but a high potential value due for execution may be asked to 'convert their value'. Typically Fune Kaisha will ask individuals to join before instigating a takeover, following the smallest first rule. Typically the organisation being absorbed, quickly moves into the fold of the 'parent company', or lack of trust between partners causes it to self-destruct without Fune Kaisha firing a single shot. Classic divide and conquer.
  • If you are approached by Fune Kaisha you may refuse requests providing they don't have a new interest that makes your current value negative if you don't convert your potential value. Negative value classifies you as a hinderer and marks you for death. Punishment is given in combinations of flesh and treasure. If they cut off your hand they expect it to stay cut-off. If you reattach or regrow they will simply carry out the same punishment again of cutting your hand off. They will then double it in punishment for ignoring them. This is all part of your current value and potential value as measure by how you interact with Fune Kaisha. Keeping a punishment shows a positive outlook on future value and not keeping it shows a negative outlook.
  • Like all organised crime, Fune Kaisha hates EI's as they tried creating their own a few times but each one gets circumvented and used against them, often wiping out large portions of the network. They don't try anymore and but instead push politically to remove EI via reforming EI Die in 2068.
  • Fune Kasha will always try to be kind, as being kind buys loyalty and gets results.
  • Fune Kasha enforcers are Samurai.
