HAA (Humanitarian Alliance Astry)

The Astry was modelled on the Navy the way the Air Force was expanded from the Army. The Astry is tasked with keeping the peace on the frontier of space and maintaining the rule of law. Using the Entangled Network each Astry ship keeps its AI fraction in constant communication with Head Quarters. Locally the ship AI is actually a fracture of the Ship EI and takes the ships name. In summary, the ship is human intelligent if on the network but if the connection is lost it drops to an AI as it doesn't have the computing capacity for a full EI. Most humans however can't tell the difference.

It should be noted that the HA has chosen to limit the computing capacity to just under EI capability as an ethical consideration. They don't want coms damage in battle to create a new EI by fracture that has its soul solely in a ship under attack. It feels the crew would be duty bound to protect the ship as a person and not use self-destruct as a defence. The 'intelligent ship' argument is a hot topic in philosophy as it is both wrong to not maximise the potential to protect the crew through ship intelligence and its wrong to expose a new life to danger and expect the crew to risk their lives to protect it.

The Astry is an independent agency all the way up the chain of command except that the very top Astry rank, Fleet Admiral, reports into the 'Commander and Chief of all Military Forces', technically a HAM rank. Most Astry ships have a nation state sponsor who can build their ship anyway they like and define any role such as 'Engineer' to mean what they want. In order to not do it 'on the cheap', these nation states also have to crew the ship themselves, leading to crews heavy in origin from that nation state. Generally this allows advanced ships from a friendly arms race, while allowing nations to count these ships as their own. The Astry recognises that these ships belong to the nation that sponsored them, but these nations have no control over the ships themselves, they are firmly Astry. Despite the official lack of control, in order to encourage more ship building, the Astry will generally follow the deployment suggestions of the constructing nation state. The ships captain can claim sovereign territory on behalf of their nation state or the HA.

Astry ships crew compliments sum up to and break down into numbers from the infinite logical series 1,2,4,8, 16, 32, 64 etc, so that all ship bunks will accommodate most combinations of passengers.

All current Astry ships are made up of following functions:
  • Command: Typically 8 crew. The executive force who can independently choose to open fire.
  • Science: Typically 8 crew. Dedicated to the outside universe, the science team make new discoveries, solve mysteries of the universe and inform the Command of potential directions to explore.
  • Engineering: Typically 8 or 16 crew. Engineering is a pool of talent that focuses on the mechanical running of the ship. Engineers get the best stuff to play with but often have to double up as another role, such as mining if there are not dedicated miners.
  • Mining: Similar to Engineering, mining is a pool of talent that can also double as Engineers. Their main purpose however is to acquire raw materials for the use of the ship.
  • Flight: Fighter Drone pilots, or if things are really desperate, actual fighter pilots who also like to race around gas giants for fun. Flight can race ahead of the mothership and they are expected to take a bullet for anyone.
  • Medical: They are true lifesavers.
  • Galley: They are metaphorical lifesavers on long trips. They are in charge of any onboard celebrations and with the Captain's permission, can commandeer other personnel to help. The Chef is also in charge of the ships Ray Cat and tends to make sure they are well fed. The Galley crew are usually very popular being few in number, in charge of the best food, with the only pet and in control of all parties.
  • Marine: Technically separate to the crew compliment but de facto crew. Depending on circumstances the lead marine or the Captain can order each other’s crew around. As far as able, both will always try to ask the others permission first.

For an example of a crew compliment, see the HAAS European Class ship.
