Regal Calculus
Regal Calculus does have an obvious origin but the current company looks nothing like the original due to the many mergers and sell-offs that happened over time. It holds a claim for continuous trading since the sixteenth century in the Kingdom of Swinterland, where a Prince Francis Edward, next in line to a European throne of Prenna was skipped, as he didn't have the right religion for the country. Living beyond his means the prince was forced to sell his palace, which did leave him with a cash surplus. He then chose to found a business on 20th March 1727 called Regal Calculus, that provided financing to some companies, while buying out and turning around failing ones.
Historians view the forcing of Prince Francis to sell his palace as fortuitous, as if had been able to keep it for financial reasons, the new king would have probably just taken it by force. In being deposed, Prince Francis Edward would be seen as a threat, which may have even resulted in his death. However, the 'commoners' would not harm royalty, even deposed royalty, out of a superstition and also a general sense of 'what goes around comes around'. King Augustus who replaced him also didn't want to set a precedent by taking action that could be interpreted as regiside; plus they were actually cousins.
In a twist of fate, in 1923 the very small Kingdom of Prenna was kingless and feeling very vulnerable. The nations leaders decided to offer themselves as a Principality of an expanded Swinterland, recognising the King of Swinterland as their king. The King of Swinterland was very happy to accept and expanded his nation.
For most of history, Regal Calculus didn't hold any significance to the Swinterland agricultural based economy, including in modern times, which mostly about being a tax haven. However, with the arrival of the HA closing down tax havens, the Swinterland economy was collapsing. Swinterland's king stubbornly fought to keep the country as a tax haven and even succeeded in that regard, being the last tax haven on the planet. The suposed victory in beating the HA was however hollow, due to the economic in or out policy of the HA which made it unviable. Swinterland was in fact saved by the company Regal Calculus, which split itself into two halves, with the Calculus side in the HA and the Regal side in Swinterland. Profit from Regal Calculus sales in Chocolate and Scientific Research became the only revenue stream to keep Swinterland going. It took and still takes an army of lawyers at great expense to keep this split going making some ask if its worth it. The Edward family who owns the company and keeps its accounts secret where not even Intelligence can look, say that it definitely is. Ironically, the transaction tax that takes 50% of the money moving in or out of Swinterland means that Regal Calculus is actually making a lot of Money for the HA.
Regal Calculus is a supporter of EI Die as it is paranoid about EI’s snooping into its operations. Paranoid is the correct word as all the EI’s chose not to violate the sovereignty of Swinterland, even though they very easily could. They view it as the right thing to do, despite intense curiosity. No one but those in the senior side of Regal actually know what’s going on in the books. Most of the public support for Regal Calculus comes from their highly vocal denouncing of Fune Kaisha who they say is constantly trying to parasitically infect the body of ‘Regal Calculus’. Unfortunately for the company, how they hold Initium Novum as a company planet, leaving the population ‘homeless’, led to the creation of Demostratus, who like to interpret the word Calculus to mean stone, or the plaque you find between teeth.
What this all means is the complicated arraignment where Regal Calculus is via Swinterland, economically at war with the HA but Regal Calculus and the HA are jointly militarily at war with the organised crime organisation Fune Kaisha. Via taxes Regal Calculus contributes to the support of the HA and by voluntary donation to the EI Die, known to be Fune Kaisha front, Regal Calculus also financially contributes to Fune Kaisha. The HA of course also militarily speaking defends the Regal Calculus company assets and via a mutual protection pact, the nation state of Swinterland.
Titles
In 1985, the President of Regal Calculus, Mr John Edward the 5th (in the family with that name) declared that businesses were not democracies and we shouldn’t ape the USA government. He gave a speech on how a better model is the benign rule of kings and declared himself King John the 5th of Regal Calculus. The 80’s power fashion loved it and the feudal titles remain used by Regal Calculus to this day, although they of course only remain corporate titles. The current head is King Francis Edward the 13th.
Writers Note:
- At this point I don't want to identify any actual European country as I don't want to cross fiction and history. I have created a fictional country called Swinterland that is similar in makeup and geography (land-locked, mountains and valleys) to Switzerland but it is not Switzerland. It's also only about 100sqkm in area. The similarity is on purpose to aid the imagination in thinking of beautiful mountains, good food and political neutrality. It is not allegorical, it is applicable. To be absolutely clear, Swinterland is not Switzerland by another name.
- Fighting off legal attacks by HA lawyers looking to isolate or fine Regal Calculus is incredibly expensive undertaking. The economic model doesn’t actually work for any normal business that is either small or large with shareholders. The model only works for mega corporations owned by a few individuals and that is how Regal Calculus works.
