Vaythuriaam Pitha 2131
The 'City of Science', India’s Bangalore, jumped on the new science initiative of the Humanitarian Alliance Science Ships, creating its own ship, the now sphere famous HASS Svarga, captained by the equally famous hero of both science and space exploration, Captain Kasturba Ramteke.
The ship and crew of HASS Svarga discovered seven protoearths, the most of any expedition, with the first discovery, Vaythuriaam Pitha discovered in 2130 and the jewel in the crown. In 2131, India selected it as its official colony and selected its best scientists to go and work there. About this time Belter's started the trend of calling it 'Vay' for short.
As the capital city of Numaya grew in population and scientific prominence, the local scientific community grew frustrated with the lack of communication with Earth. The latest scientific breakthroughs on Earth, had to be put onto a currier and transported by ship and in a race on a breakthrough, Vay victories lost out to second places who were heard first. Time lag to Earth was a definite disadvantage to the economy and the monthly wait was almost unbearable for many.
The very regular shuttles also freely carried people, which in turn encouraged other transports. The population grew, mostly from people emigrating from India. By 2140 Vaythuriaam Pitha had passed 20,000 people gaining independence via the Settlement Act 2109, but governed with the support of India, which referred to itself as 'mother'. With ample space and resources, the science flourished making Vaythuriaam Pitha 'the science planet', as marketed and largely recognised in the sphere.
Following a directive from the Vay government, and paid for by a HATTER grant, all means of improving communication were being researched. For a long time the front runner was a high powered portal laser com using the only known method of FTL communications at the time, to generate a micro portal and fire a laser com through it. Unfortunately, that method was only really workable intrasystem as even tiny differences in the direction and velocity of the stars meant that the far end of the portal could not be held relatively still to the receiver. The project was abandoned when Ops El banned the micro portals within Sol as a hazard to shipping. Finally, in 2181, a method of entanglement was developed.
HASS Svarga was scheduled to be been turned into an orbital museum but was given two last missions. Firstly it was dispatched to Earth to carry the latest data packet as a currier, but also with it, it had an entangled communication device. On arriving in Sol, it connected to the internet and to everyone else's surprise, Vaythuriaam Pitha themselves announced the breakthrough in thousands of phone calls.
The technological understanding was gifted freely to the HA to distribute (the original HATTER grant probably had a lot to do with that, with other grants in the offing), along with one of the two communication devises to be permanently plugged into the internet. It ultimately led to the Entangled Network. The other device was kept on the HASS Svarga, making it the first ship to hold a permanent communication capability. The HASS Svarga was then tasked with the ill-fated second mission of making the furthest portal jump. Although it should have long since generated a portal, currently (2215) it is stuck, relatively frozen in time, powering away from Sol near the speed of light.
Vaythuriaam Pitha has a single ocean and a single super continent, domed and a remnant of the formation of the planet. Terraforming was achieved through millions of fusion plants powering a catalytic reaction that pulled the carbon off the oxygen. The carbon was used to make a variety of products, including 'sugar soil' first used to plant grasses.
As the planet cooled the weather changed, making vast rivers including the seven rivers that flow through the capital Numaya. Scientific forethought had predicted and planned for the city to have these rivers so no harm was caused when they filled. The population currently stands at over 800,000 and the incredible planning has made Numaya repeatedly voted as 'the most incredible city' in the human sphere.
