Temporal Scanner
Fi-sics Purpose
For absolute clarity, the following is Fi-sics and NOT physics. The Fi-sics purpose in this case is to provide a way of finding out if the time line has been changed and when. I have no intention of using this any time soon so it will remain unrefined in detail.
Zero Kelvin
Using entanglement technology, a hydrogen molecule is able to be cooled to zero kelvin, where it has no energy. At this point, photons of a specific electromagnetic frequency spontaneously emit from the around the atom (not the atom). It is discovered that anything cooled to zero degrees doesn’t experience time so the photonic release is excess time released as energy.
The entangled cooling method can continue to provide cooling to a molecule even if it is already at zero kelvin and cannot become cooler than zero kelvin. The resulting cooling applied is therefore expressed as time reversal.
The Basic Scanner
A molecule cooled to zero kelvin and no further, will emit light at the frequency of the universe. Currently green. The more cooling applied the further back in time the molecule will travel. If there are any changes to the time line, the colour will shift as the molecule is ‘dialled’ back in time (see Time Travel), otherwise if it’s the first time line, the colour will not change. If the molecule receives heating it will stay at zero kelvin until it reaches the present day where it will then begin to warm up. Note that if the time line is redundant, when the change happens, a dialling forward molecule will change colour to the new frequency of the universe. This will remain until the present day, where if it warms up, it returns to the current time line.
I feel an example would help. Imagine a time traveller leaving the original time line, going back to 1920 and changing things for the better. Someone scanning the present in the original (first) time line, will find the frequency of the universe is green. They will then dial the molecule back to 1920 and find it green. They can continue back to 1910 and it will still be green. As they apply heat to dial it forward it will stay green until it passes 1920 where it shifts to blue. It then stays blue all the way forward to the present day. If molecule heats up above zero kelvin then it reverts back to the original time line and if so cooled again to zero degrees it will then again show green light.
An Advance Scanner
In an advanced scanner, a device such as a crystal radio will be surrounded by cooled molecules, creating a bubble to move the device back in time. Note that the device stays in the ‘space’ of the current universe, but is available to pick up anything traveling through that space in the previous time, as anchored by the atoms around the time traveling molecules. Note that the planet earth spins, orbits the sun and even the galaxy is moving relative to other galaxies, so the anchoring keeps the global coordinates locked. This is how it is in the same space, but not the same time. An advanced scanner can therefore pick up old TV broadcasts and as it’s dialled forward again, it can pick up the alternative ‘present’ broadcasts from the altered reality.
As a spin off to this, if the anchoring molecules came from say a commit, then the broadcasts received from the past will be from where the commit was. If it was something sent from another universe, or time, the dial back will follow the personal history of those molecules.
Forward Travel
Forward travel in time is much harder but possible. The entire temperature range lies in the present, with less than zero equal to the past, but more than the maximum temperature will push the molecule into the future. The catch being that the maximum temperature theoretically possible, known as the Planck temperature, is about 10^32 Kelvin. At this temperature a molecule couldn’t actually exist as a molecule, so anything moving forward would need to be in a hot bubble that is considerably cooler on the inside. It is far easier to use relativity resulting from high speed to take you into the future, although you need a large column of empty space and you’d be at risk of sabotage.
Writers Notes
As a visual shorthand, a more blue light is a shift to a ‘happier, freer’ universe where as a more red light is a more ‘evil’ universe. I’ve not defined a way to exit the bubble into the past but I’m sure you the writer can think of some way to pop the bubble. Remember that people left behind by travellers in time will be able to scan and see instant results, so if you don’t want this as an author, follow the traveller.
